Motivation is something that many people ask me for. How do I motivate myself they say? People can be motivated from within or from the outside. Those that are motivated from within, do things for themselves. They are proud of what they do and how they do it. Those that get motivation from the outside, may need the encouragement of others to help them succeed. They like praise and thanks for what they do. However there are some general ways you can motivate yourself regardless of whether you are intrinsically motivated or externally motivated.

Visualization. Being able to visualize what you want can be essential for focus. After all if you don't have a clear picture of what you want, how will you be able to work towards it? Some people say they can't visualize - however you can it takes practice. It is said that the mind can not differentiate between a real effect and one that has been vividly imagined. Therefore think and visualize your goal. This will help motivate you.

One thing that works for people is to cut out a picture of what ever it is you want to focus on, and then post it at a conspicuous place at work or at home where you will see it a number of times per day. When you feel disheartened, this image will remind you of your goal and will help you keep your focus.

Write it down. Research has shown that people who write down what they need to do achieve their goals more often than those who simply keep mental lists.

Psychologically committing something to paper (or computer document) for some reason makes it more powerful. You may decide to break down your goal into smaller goals and reward yourself for each milestone you reach.

It's important to understand that you must take time to reward yourself for doing a good job - sometimes no one else will!

Remove negativity. Negative people cam lower your self-esteem and bring you down. It's essential to get these negative people out of your life. Ensure that you are always in the company of positive people. Removing negativity also means avoiding newspapers, tv news channels etc. This does not mean you are hiding from the truth. Why fill yourself with negative stories? The truth is there are lots of great things that happen in the world today, seek those out, rather than the negative ones.

Be Pro-Active. Some people wait for things to happen, others just do it. So instead of waiting for things to happen out of thin air, like magic, be proactive and ensure that you make things happen. Remember, being inactivity can lead to idleness and stagnation. Both of these states will stop you from reaching your goals.

Expand your mind. Take time out to read inspirational and self help books. Better still see if you can get an audio recording to listen to while on your way to work, or out for a walk. Such books and audios will help to keep you focused, fill you with positivity, improve your attitude and heal your mind.

Training. You may find it hard to be motivated because the job that you are doing requires training that you have not been given - go out and seek where you can train and learn more. Look to the Internet to see if you can find more information.

All these tips are important, but the most valuable one is this:

Whatever you have been meaning to do or wanting to achieve, JUST DO IT!

This is so important, you need to take action and just go for what you desire. Don't over analysis and say what if it does not work out. Consider what will happen if it does work out. Without action you will achieve little or nothing.

If something seems unattainable break it down into smaller steps. As the saying goes - how do you eat an elephant? One bit at a time. By breaking things down into smaller steps the larger issue becomes less overwhelming, and seeing results of each step will boost your confidence and thus increase motivation to succeed.

Remember feeling unmotivated happens to everyone at one point or another. If you don't encourage or challenge your self than no one else will. Always keep your eye on the goal, discover new ways to do things, if things don't work out the way you thought they would. You goal or destination can stay the same, but how you get there will continue to change. Never give up!

Realize that more often than not the fulfillment, satisfaction, and self-achievement to derived from reaching your goal is also very motivating.
